Our Winery Philosophy

Εύ Αμπελουργείν…
Εύ Οινοποιείν…
Εύ Ζην

Hatziioannou winery aims from the beginning to produce high quality wines.
Having a special regard for the Muscat White Mikrorogo variety, the famous variety of Samos since ancient times, it aims to further promote it with all white dry and natural sweet wines consisting exclusively of this variety.

The production of the raw material is based exclusively on distinguished vineyards which also make up the privately owned vineyard of the winery.

The vineyards have a minimum age of 20 years, are arid and are cultivated by hand by experienced winery staff.

The respect for nature as well as for man sets the bar high by placing all the vineyards in an organic farming regime, while the winemaking techniques are perfectly intertwined with the above ideology.

Finally, to ensure quality, the annual number of bottles is limited and numbered.

Muscat & Samos

…Place me on Sunium’s marbled steep,
Where nothing, save the waves and I,
May hear our mutual murmurs sweep;
There, swan-like, let me sing and die:
A land of slaves shall ne’er be mine —
Dash down yon cup of Samian wine!

(from the poem ‘Isle of Greece’, by Lord Byron)

SAMOS, the Lady of the vines

Tradition has it that the white muscat mikrorog has been established in Samos since the time of Polycrates of Samios, brought by Agaios from Asia Minor. Information about the wines of Samos can be found in Hippocrates, Galen and Theophrastus, while the Kyrenia ship carried wines from Samos to various ports (around the 4th century BC).

Tradition also states that Antony, at the height of his love affair with Cleopatra, ordered wine from Samos.

About Moschato, Jancis Robinson writes in her book “Vines, Grapes and Wines” (Mitchell Beazley, 1986): “The best kind of Moschato was known in Greece centuries before the other kinds came to the surface. The island of Samos is the world headquarters and the variety remains the most important of the whole island.

In the depths of the centuries, this noble variety acquires a great locality in the soil and climate system of Samos and as the “old people” say, the vines here grow by themselves.

It is the official wine product of Greece, that is, it is offered on the basis of protocol at a diplomatic level.

When Greece became a member of the European Union, Samos wine is the only wine product that is placed under special status. So PDO SAMOS can be written on the label as SAMOS without the clarifications required for other wines.

In the European Union, along with ‘SAMOS’, only 6 other products have this special treatment and in total they are: SAMOS, PORTO, SHERRY, CHAMPAIGN, COGNAC, SCOTCH WHISKEY, IRISH WHISKEY.
